Buying a new domain name? Do you know 1&1′s dirty little secret?

Ever since starting my website using a .co.uk domain name, I’ve been trying to get my hands on the associated .com and recently I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had not been renewed by its previous owner. I had to wait for it to become available to register (a period of about 76 days after expiry which seemed to take ages!) and then tried to buy it. Unfortunately, this is where I ran into some problems.

Using whois querying tools, I sat online, watched and waited for the domain to drop before I tried to buy it and my initial problem came when I tried to purchase the domain as soon as it had been dropped from Netfirms, my registrar of choice. Unfortunately, I had been checking to see if the domain was available using their domain query service which had obviously cached the domain details so it didn’t “think” it had been released. No problem, I thought – I’ll just get it from 1&1 instead.  That, as it happened, was a bad idea.

I bought the domain from within my existing control panel (I already have a couple of domains with 1&1) and it showed its status as “the domain has been requested” – I didn’t think much of it and thought that the job was done. After a while, I realised that I hadn’t heard anything from 1&1 confirming the purchase, so I went back to check my control panel and it still showed “the domain has been requested” status. A quick whois check showed that the domain was still available to anyone to purchase from any other registrar!

On the basis I had been waiting a period of years to secure this domain, this news wasn’t well received, especially since I thought the purchase had been made. I checked with GoDaddy and the domain showed as being available – not wanting to risk losing it, I purchased it from them immediately. GoDaddy were able to secure the domain for me within seconds, it came off the open market and was mine. My 1&1 control panel still showed “the domain has been requested”. 1and1.co.uk are supposed to be a reputable domain registrar, yet I was able to buy a domain 50 minutes after I had “purchased” it from them – to me, that is unacceptable.

After a period of around two hours, my 1&1 control panel showed “the domain has already been registered” and I received precisely nothing from 1&1. No email was ever sent to me to say that the registration was unsuccessful, no warnings or anything were given which is utterly pathetic. I didn’t really want to take this lying down so I emailed complaints@1and1.co.uk and explained why I wasn’t happy. I had a few laughable responses from them including my personal favourite:

Me: “This domain was purchased via another registrar a significant amount of time after I had placed my order with 1&1.  This is not acceptable.”

1&1 Complaints Dept: “I’m sorry someone had registered it before you.  This is unfortunate, but it does happen.  There are people who make a living off of these low tactics.”

After a further three emails to the Complaints department, I managed to extract an interesting bit of information from 1&1 that they don’t tell you:

Me: “Can you please explain why 1&1 are unable to register domains at the time an order is placed? Why does 1&1 require 12-24 hours to register the domain when other registrars do so immediately?”

1&1 Complaints Dept: “1and1 registers domains in batches.  After a certain amount of registration requests are submitted, 1and1 then proceeds to register them.  This is why we ask our customers to allow 12 – 24 hours for official registration and word of such. We apologize, however, this is the way our system works.”

So in summary, 1&1 do not register your domain straight away – they put it off until they have a load of registrations pending, then they do it in a batch. In the domain industry, five minutes (or even seconds in some cases) can make a massive difference and it seems utterly unbelievable to me that 1and1.co.uk operate in this manner. If you are buying a domain, you want it to be secured immediately and therefore I recommend that you avoid 1&1 and that you use better registrars such as Netfirms and GoDaddy – I’ve had excellent experience with both of these registrars.

This was exactly the info I was looking for. I just lost three prime domains from 1&1!!! Ridiculous. Good thing it was just an SEO experiment. Are my domains secure with them?

  • Oren says:

I have had the same issue with the US 1and1.com. At times, even closer to 48+ hours. Its completely unacceptable, and it should be addressed by them immediately.

Same here…attempted to register 3 domains Wednesday night around 10 PM ET. The .org went through by the next morning, but the .com and .net are still sitting in the “The domain has been requested.” status. What is crap is after 12 hours or so, Whois on the .com and .net both show 1and1 registered the domains, yet they haven’t released them to me.

I’ll never register a domain with them again even though the prices are great.

  • Meatball says:

Oh, and just to clarify, going past 48 hours in oh…30 minutes.

  • Sharon says:

It will be 5 days this afternoon since I purchased a domain name and it still says: “Domain is being requested”. This is the first time I had problems with 1and1 usually goes through within 24 hours. whois says it belongs to me!

  • rudi says:

It has only been 1 hour for me. The whole thing looked bad,… bad.

I too checked godaddy just to see my domain was still available.

Thanks a lot for your post on this issue.

Seems like getting free private domains for a cheap price isnt that easy….

I just registered for a domain on 1and1, actually.

The fact that they delay things too much just turned me off. Luckily, they haven’t charged me yet so I was able to cancel the deal at the same day.

  • tosh says:

I don’t know what you guys are smooking. 1and1 has been great for me. I just registered a dropped domain with them, they secured the deal and it was hosted within 2 hours of starting the process.

  • Adam says:

I take your point that you had a good experience with 1&1 – in fact, I have a number of .uk domains that I registered with 1&1 without any problems. The fact that they don’t send out a buy command immediately when the domain is ordered is really not a good idea and it seems that I’ve been lucky previously to not experience such a delay with my past purchases and lose the domains. When buying a domain, you don’t want to rely on luck, you want to rely on a professional registrar to get the job done for you. My latest experience with 1&1 has shown that their methods rely on luck rather than judgement which is no good.

hi! i’m having a similar issue with 1and1 right now. my issue is that i already had the domain with 1and1, but needed to drop the hosting package i had and just go with a basic domain package. when that happens they told me they have to “reregister” the domain. well, this was 2 weeks ago and i still cannot point my domain to my new hosting server. 2 weeks. and they offer no explanation. my website is down and i have no email. im seriously thinking about transferring the domain.

  • Paul Vincent says:

I have been charged for a domain and its not even been signed up yet and all they tell me is there is a problem with their server and they are working on it

  • Newby says:

Ive had issues with 1 and 1 over the last few months. They fixed this registering issue last month, and today it is back. I have 200+ domains with 1 and 1 and they are worrying me… doubts arn’t good!!

  • Jason says:

Same story here. I’ve grown accustomed to near real-time registrations at Godaddy. I was tempted by the low price at 1&1, so I registered a domain through them today. I haven’t received an order confirmation or any other type of communication from them. I should have stayed with Goaddy. Thanks for the information. I guess you really do get what you pay for.

  • Aneela says:

Thanks for your advice. I attempted to register a domain with 1and1 about 5 days ago. I called them several times, and they just kept delaying and saying the same thing. After reading your post, I cancelled my contract today with 1and1 and registered with GoDaddy. Within a minute of paying, I checked the availability of my domain on 1and1, and it was no longer available.
    Thanks again!

  • Alex says:

1&1 offer nothing good besides the website pricing. The web management stinks, the delays are laughable (why can’t you pre-set DNS servers for your domain purchase?) and now – the best of all:
I’ve been trying to register a domain name for over a week with them, only to get a “500 Server Error” before the purchase is completed. Calling them was no use – they have no idea what it is. I registered the domain by Godaddy, and had it in a blink. 3 weeks later, and I’m trying to buy another domain by them – same server error issue!

I’d say run like hell away from them

  • Lejoan says:

This happen to me, I experienced that I buy one domain and Im sure the domain is still available when I buy it in 1and1 then after one one day they email me and said I can’t register the domain because it was already registered by someone else.

And also I experience that i check the domain in 1and1 if the domain i wanted is available and they said it was not available, but when i check it on namecheap it says it is still available so I buy it on namecheap and I get the domain I want. The person who buy it on 1and1 lose the domain for sure because namecheap is faster to register it than 1and1.

So my advice to you is never buy any domains in 1and1, buy from other registrar. It is also hard to cancel the domain you buy in 1and1.

  • myname:) says:

The same thing happened to me…
now they did buy it. and it is registered to me, but….
I have no access to it, because it is still being requested…

  • Dbird says:

I found a bit of a work around. On the control panel for your host you will find your IP address of your site under account info or such. If you are stuck in “The domain has been requested” you can go to your DNS settings just as if your were going to change your name servers, under “Advanced DNS settings” you’ll see the option to change “IP address (A-Record)” Change this to the IP address of your website that you find in your hosts account settings and you’ll be alright.
I sincerely hopes this helps some folks, I just wasted half a day on this issue and will not be using 1and1 again.

  • Someone Not Loved says:

I had another unfortunate thing from 1and1, because I didnt pay a bill for 1 yr (even though they really claimed to try and contact me) I attempted to pay for it about a year later after finding out I couldnt register anything… well they blaklist you, and deny you forever and ever.. as they told me. I asked what was the “debt for” they said “Dear xxx, you have debt” that was highly unprofessional. At least give someone the opportunity to make right and pay an invoice. (the invoice was only $6 btw)

Good luck to anyone else using 1and1, visit another reputable hoster/registrar instead!

  • Nai says:

I have the same problem right now, gonna request a refund. It’s been a week I guess. I don’t know for sure, since they don’t send you an email immediately after you pay.

I sent them an email a couple of days ago and they responded with an auto-reply, including my login details. Thank god I googled the message. I’m never using them again.

  • Josh says:

Ridiculous! This answers my quandary as to why my domain STILL isn’t registered about 18 hours after ‘registration’ with 1and1 was complete. Go Daddy may see my business soon.
